The M1917 .30 cal heavy machine gun

The Browning M1917 .30 calibur heavy machine gun was a weapons model used extensively in the Guadalcanal Campaign, most notably by John Basilone

Usage in Guadalcanal

Like as was said above, the machine gun found particular use by the marines in the Guadalcanal Campaign, where it was one of the most used weapons during that time, along with the Springfield Model 1903.

Robert Leckie first used it in the Battle of the Tenaru, whcih was the Baptism by Fire for Leckie's unit. He and his friend Lew "Chuckler" Juergens used it to mow down several Japanese soldiers.

It's most notable usage, again was by John Basilone, who also used it to mow down many Japanese soldiers in an ensuing battle, even while it was off it's tripod. He kept using it throughout the battle, except when he moved some dead bodies out of the way of his friend's field of fire.

This machine gun was also used by many others, even in those same battles. After WWII, it was used to a limited extent in the Korean War before it was phased out by the M60.
